Sown in Weakness

Lydia Howard Sigourney

"Sown in weakness, and raised in power."
-- Corinthians I 15:43.

We've sown a precious seed, that in our hearts was nurs'd,
A germ that promis'd fairest bloom, we've sown it in the dust,
And darkly o'er our joys there fell a withering blight,
As higher rose the swelling mound, that hid it from our sight.

We sow'd it, while the winds were sweeping wild and wide,
While Winter struck the leafless trees, and hollow groans replied;
Yet strength was in our souls, though griev'd and tempest-tost,
For by a Saviour's word of truth, we knew it was not lost.

Not lost! though buried deep beneath the frozen plain,
We trusted that the vernal breath would give it life again;
Not that capricious beam which clouds so often shade,
But yon Eternal Spring, that wakes the flowers that never fade.

The Weeping Willow. 1791-1865.
